Toy Dolls

Sunderland’s finest still pulling the crowds

Nationality: UK

Genre: Punk

What the Toy Dolls are most famous for, of course, is their 1982 punk version of children’s song Nellie the Elephant, which made it to number four in the UK, their only major chart hit. But the band with the iconic sunglasses has always been popular on the live circuit with their very silly set of sing-a-long-a-punk songs like Yul Brynner Was a Skinhead, My Girlfriend’s Dad’s a Vicar, Deidre’s a Slag, Carol Dodds is Pregnant and James Bond Lives Down Our Street.

In addition to that, there are their hilarious punk takes on such mainstream classics as Livin’ La Vida Loca, I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) and The Final Countdown, often with the lyrics modified to refer to places in the Northeast of England, such as The Kids in Tyne and Wear (Kids in America) and The Devil Went Down to Scunthorpe (The Devil Went Down to Georgia) – and their albums include such moments of brilliant humour as one of the all-time classics when a track is interrupted by somebody hoovering. Class.

Much as you’d probably think that these boys should be wearing slippers and smoking pipes by now, in 2007, and although guitarist Michael “Olga” Algar, who also now does the lead vocals, is the only original member of the band left, they decided that after 14 years of rest the time had come to revisit their youth and start leaping about on stages once again. They’ve just brought out a new album, The Album After the Last One, and includes the single Credit Crunch Christmas. Plain to see, that after all these years, ‘serious’ is still not a word you would associate with the Toy Dolls.

No, they’re sheer fun – although I’m not too sure how much of their very British humour will be properly grasped by Spanish audiences…

Did you know: Although the Toy Dolls are very tongue in cheek, Olga is regarded as one of the finest punk guitarists to have ever lived, as reflected by the many worldwide awards and polls he’s won.
