Refused are back after a fourteen year absence. The far-left anti-capitalist Swedes were a massive underground punk band in nineties, before suddenly splitting up in 1998, just after releasing The Shape of Punk to Come. That album lived up to its name, Kerrang considering it the 13th most influential record of all time.
Various reasons were given for the break-up, from musical differences to bitterness at the poor reception some of their shows were getting, but the be all and end of it was that “Refused Are Fucking Dead,” a song they introduced at one of their final gigs by explaining how going in different directions with new projects would at least help spread their socialist views even further.
That they have been doing with varying degrees of success, but for the last year or two there have been rumours of a reunion. They have finally turned out to be true, and Refused will be appearing at a number of festivals this year, including Primavera Sound in Barcelona.
A long statement on their website explains their motivations and how they “didn’t do ‘The Shape Of Punk To Come’ justice when it was first released … It’s been a motley 14 years since our band came apart … A reunion has just seemed irrelevant to us.”
It’s major coup for the Primavera Sound, but perhaps more for the publicity it will get than the band’s pulling power, and the whole thing hasn’t gone down too well with the fans that have stayed loyal to them all these years – who were looking forward to enjoying Refused gigs but not having to pursue the festival circuit in order to do so.
Did you know: They’re playing with the same line-up as in 1998 when they broke up, apart from bassist Magnus Flagge. But as they never had a permanent bassist anyway, that doesn’t make much difference.
