Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

The former Inspiral Carpets roadie … and he had a hand in some band called Oasis as well

Nationality: UK

Genre: Rock, britpop

In August 2009, and following a guitar-breaking bust-up in Paris, Noel Gallagher decided he couldn’t stick working with his brother Liam any more, and that effectively marked the end of one of the biggest bands of the last twenty years, Oasis.

Two years later, he unveiled his new solo project, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, which feature himself along with former Oasis session pianist Mike Rowe, drummer Jeremy Stacey (The Lemon Trees), bassist Russell Pritchard (The Zutons ) and guitarist Tim Smith. Their self-titled debut album, a number one in the UK and Ireland, has already produced hits in The Death of You and Me, If I Had a Gun… and AKA… What a Life!, and in all honesty, it’s shocked us all. Put simply, this is probably the best thing Noel has been involved in since the golden days of Morning Glory. Finally getting rid of his younger bro’ seems to have done the trick (although, to be fair, Liam’s Beady Eye project ain’t got too many flies on it either).

Essentially it’s still the same Oasis-y sound, and Noel and his new friends are off on a tour in which he says they’ll “start off slow in small theatres. If it’s good enough to get bigger than that then it’ll get bigger than that. I don’t think there’ll be a huge great big tour this year. I think this year it’ll be a quick whizz around the world and try and do the major cities and then it will probably be a bigger tour next year.”

They’re at the Razz in Barcelona in early March, and are back again as one of the headline acts at Benicassim in July.

The first show of the tour was in Dublin, and Oasis fans will be delighted to know that the setlist is peppered with tunes from Noel’s former band too, including Whatever, Supersonic, Talk Tonight, Half The World Away and Don’t Look Back In Anger.

Did you know: The name of Noel’s new band is taken from the song “High Flying Bird” by Jefferson Airplane.
