Luis Miguel

The Mexican Frank Sinatra

Nationality: Mexican

Genre: Latin pop, bolero, mariachi

This multiple Grammy winner, known as the ‘The Sun of Mexico’, has been one of the biggest names in Latin pop for three decades since blasting to stardom aged just 15 with his rather disturbing duet with Sheena Easton, “Me Gustas Tal Como Eres” – since then going to become the only artist to have two Spanish language albums go platinum in the USA.

But where he’s especially famed is for his massive world tours, ten years ago going on the highest grossing tour ever by a Latin artist. That record has been beaten twice since, both times by Luis Miguel himself.

And his current tour looks set to beat his own record. Since releasing his self-titled album in September 2010, he’s been on constant tour and grossing something roughly in the region of millions and millions of dollars. This series of concerts around Spain, his first in the country for five years, are the very last leg of all, with it all ending with two nights in a row at the Palacio de los Deportes in Madrid. Time for the man regarded as the Latin Frank Sinatra to get some well deserved rest and start spending some of that cash he’s picked up along the way.

As far as the typical gringo or guiri is concerned, Luis is just some Latino geezer who croons away about how much his pobre corazón is hurting over some bird he got tired of shagging. But Latin American girls adore this kind of kitsch. And lads, if you fancy one, you’ve got two options. You offer to buy her a beer, or you mention that you’ve got a couple of Luis Miguel tickets in your back pocket. One of those options is going to get you the ride. And it’s not the first.

And those Chinese shops can probably sort you out with the cotton wool to stuff in your ears. Believe me, you’ll need it. There’s over thirty songs to get through…

Did you know: When Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was captured, the press stated that Luis Miguel’s album Segundo Romance was found among his belongings. No shit…
