Lana del Rey
Rob Grant made his fortune by investing in Internet domain names. Clever geezer. Among the things he spent his cash on was financing the career of his daughter, Lizzie, who was marketed as Lana del Rey, and as a result this ‘gangsta’ version of Nancy Sinatra has become one of the most vilified singers on the current circuit, for being the rich bitch that wants us to believe she escaped from The Hood.
The girl with the sultry looks and impossibly implanted lips has never really claimed any such thing, and most of the hatred focused on her has been grossly unfair since she exploded onto the scene in 2011 with the song Video Games. So good was the mournful melody and Lana’s pouting looks that the song was released again, this time called Born to Die, and was just as big a hit, as was the album of the same name, a number one in several countries and which helped her win the international breakthrough artist award at the 2012 BRITS
Blue Jeans was single three, a more ambitious song that really showed the power of this lady’s vocals, although when she appeared with the song on Saturday Night Live, the performance was so dire that there were rumours that she cancelled her tour because of it. Again, the criticism was unfair, she hadn’t cancelled her tour – she never had one in the first place, and although SNL was a bit of embarrassment, who hasn’t had a duff performance now and then? She had just become the victim of her own hype, and gave her critics just the ammunition they needed.
At Sonar you’ll have the chance to judge Lana del Rey, who the rumour millers have romantically tied with Marilyn Manson of late, on her own merits. Let’s hope she can silence the critics – for it does still remain to be seen whether she really is good as folk think she is.
Did you know: Speaking to Vogue, she explained why she chose to call herself the King’s Wool. “I wanted a name I could shape the music towards […] I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba – Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue.”
