James Taylor

My Taylor is rich!

Nationality: US

Genre: Folk rock, country

Some rather disappointing news for anybody that clicked here thinking that James Taylor, lead singer of eighties legends Kool and the Gang, is appearing in Spain. ‘Fraid all we’ve got to offer is five-time Grammy award winner James Taylor, best known for his 1971 cover of Carole King’s You’ve Got a Friend.

His other smashes included Fire and Rain, Mockingbird (with former wife Carly Simon), How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You, Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight and Handy Man – putting him right up there with Neil Diamond, Don Mclean and the other ‘mellow American with his geetar’ greats of the seventies.

Taylor’s light looked to flicker out with the end of the seventies, but in 1997 he released his first album for sixteen years, Hourglass, and the word realised he could muse away about life while tickling away at his six-string with as much verve as ever, which he once again demonstrated in 2002 with his wonderful October Road. OK, it’s all pretty much the same old whimsically mellow acoustic stuff, but there aren’t many that can get a song’s emotion across as well as James Taylor. And what better way to chill out than to the sound of a living legend of American folk – ranked the 84th greatest artist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Incidentally, if you’re wondering what the header to this page is all about, ‘my tailor is rich’ is a cult sentence in Spain – for some bizarre reason this was considered the first sentence students were expected to learn in the massively used, but generally useless, Assmil teach-yourself-English course. Just in case you were interested…

Did you know: In 2006 he was named MusiCares Person of the Year, and a concert was given by different artists playing his songs and speaking about how he had influenced their careers. Guests included Carole King, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Jackson Browne, Sheryl Crow, the Dixie Chicks and Paul Simon.
