The Cruilla de Cultures used to be an urban music festival in the city of Mataró, just up the coast from Barcelona. In 2008, like so many other things, it was shifted down to the Parc del Forum in Barcelona itself. It’s a popular enough little event, although not quite of the status that it’s worth travelling miles and miles for.
And the Catalans like it like that. Primavera may bring hordes of guiris into the city, but Cruilla is an event for the locals. It’s more for the people of Barcelona that couldn’t afford to go to one of the major festivals. Most of the bands are of local stock, but there are always one or two biggish internationals acts in the mix too (last year it had Madness and Public Enemy).
There’s a chance you might like this event even more than Barcelona’s other too main events. You’ll be spared the pretentiousness über-alternativeness of Primavera, the pill-powered techo-wizardry of Sonar, and the pitching of a tent on some bird for Croydon’s puke of Benicàssim. And with The Specials and Iggy Pop already confirmed on the bill, you could be in for some pretty decent music too.
Friday July 6 and Saturday July 7, 2012 at Parc del Forum
The Specials, Iggy Pop, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Cypress Hill
Gogol Bordello, Linton Kwesi Johnson, La Pegatina, Amadou & Mariam, Quimi Portet, Bigott, Nneka, Lenacay
